Mia's story

Six year old Mia from Liverpool was born with many health problems that she copes with on a daily basis, including Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Hydrocephalus and learning difficulties to name a few. In spite of her problems and continuous treatment Mia is a very happy young girl who loves spending time with her family but this is hampered by having no suitable garden in which to play with her siblings.

Mia is in a wheelchair and so access into and around the garden is essential in order for her to use the space. Before the makeover Mia’s garden was overgrown, run down and had a very uneven surface for her to try to manoeuvre around on.

The Helping Hands volunteer team from manufacturing company SSL International completely cleared the garden, levelled the ground, and laid a flat lawn with suitable path for her to use easily and safely. The enthusiastic team also added some raised flowerbeds and included a swing to create a child and wheelchair friendly outdoor space where Mia can spend some quality time with her friends and family.

Julie Brown, Mia’s mum said: “Thank you is not enough to describe how grateful we are to all of you for making the project possible. Mia is now able to play with her brothers instead of just watching and for that we will be forever thankful. We have just had such a fantastic experience and we are so touched by all the effort that both WellChild and the team from SSL International have put in to making our garden so perfect.”
