Case Studies - Abir

Until 3 years ago Abir was a normal child until a suspected case of meningitis left him wheelchair bound, unable to speak, fed through a tube, having regular seizures and completely dependent on his family for care. Abir has a hoist to get him in and out of bed, but until recently his father had to lift him in and out.

Luckily, through the WellChild Helping Hands programme, one company offered to send in a team of volunteers. Their task was to make a dramatic change to this family’s life just in 1 day! The large team repainted the living room where Abir spends time with his family. In addition they painted the hallway leading to his bedroom and also Abir's bedroom which was given a bright new aquatic theme with bright blue walls, seaside border, luminous stars on his ceiling, and generously donated sea-creature shaped lighting for the walls.

To have done this much work in such a small space of time was just incredible and proved to be a great team building day.

Abir's mother was dleighted with the results, and commented “We are so pleased with the outcome of the project, to have done so much work in so little time is amazing. We have not seen Abir respond to his surroundings so positively for 2 years, he is reaching and touching and looking all the time, it is amazing, thank you so much.”

The feedback from the company was also very positive with the volunteers being keen to do more.

“I got great satisfaction from completing the project”
“I would like to do another project”
