Sekinat's story

Sekinat looks at her new gardenNine year old Sekinat from Kent lives with Cerebral Palsy associated with left side weakness, Hydrocephalus and also has frequent seizures. She is reliant on a wheelchair for mobility and requires 24 hour care for her every need.

As a young girl Sekinat loves to be outside playing but since the family have moved house she has not even had the opportunity to access her garden due to acquiring an area which was very overgrown and uncared for.

Sekinat’s limitation to the house has meant that she gets very frustrated and agitated which has a knock on effect to her health issues. WellChild and Experian wanted to remove this upset for Sekinat and along with her family, designed a beautiful garden that she could really enjoy.

The project began when the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and began clearing the garden of all the overgrown weeds and plants that swamped the ground. From there they proceeded to install some raised flower beds for sensory plants, lay a soft floor playing area and a brand new lawn. The one day makeover certainly required a lot of hard work from those involved but the end result was certainly worth all the effort.

Lee Trunks, WellChild Helping Hands Manager said “This was a tough project to complete in just one day but the end result is just fantastic for the family. Transforming Sekinat’s garden has meant that she now has the ability to move around safely while enjoying all the new features it has for her.

"She can now look forward to the coming summer months being spent outside with her friends and family. Many thanks to Experian and all the volunteers included without which this project could never have happened.”

Sekinat’s mother also expressed her thanks to the team saying, “Thank you so much to everyone who was here helping with our garden – it really is a dream come true. We feel so lucky and it’s just so wonderful.”
