In memory of Rowan. Why we are running the Great North Run

Posted on the 25th August 2017

Ember (little sister of Rowan) will be running the mini Great North Run for WellChild on 9th September, a massive 1.5K for those little 3 year old legs. She knows she is running for her sister Row Row which is so sweet! She is so excited to wear her running leggings and pink trainers that match mummy’s and of course to collect that medal at the end!!

Myself and Matt will then take on the 13.1 miles on the Great North Run on the 10th Sept. We were very lucky to access the services of WellChild in 2012. Our beautiful daughter Rowan was in the ICU then HDU at Sheffield Children’s hospital. We had been told there was no more that could be done for her and it looked like she was losing her battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 1. We were transferred to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice for end of life care but as Rowan let us know it wasn’t yet her time to go we were allocated our WellChild Nurse Katie.

Without Katie making sure that everything was organised for us, such things as medical equipment, GP and consultant support etc. We would never have got Rowan back to our own home to spend a further wonderful 6 weeks with her.

She passed away peacefully at home in my arms surrounded by love. For this we are forever grateful.

Sarah, mum to Ember and Rowan.
