WellChild shortlisted to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative

Posted on the 8th November 2017

WellChild has been selected as one of three projects to benefit from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores – being awarded to local community projects. This November and December, Sailability Summer Splash has been put forward!

Over the past few years, Consultant Paediatrician, Dr David Thomas has teamed up with WellChild and Carsington Sailing Club to organise the Sailability Summer Splash. Specially created for families who have children and young people with exceptional health needs and limited mobility, Sailability gives families a unique opportunity to experience the exhilaration of sailing in specially adapted fully accessibly boats with experienced crews.

For children with multiple and complex needs and limited mobility, the nature of their conditions and their personal circumstances makes taking part in communal activities either extremely difficult or virtually impossible. Local leisure facilities often don’t have suitable equipment or trained staff to provide leisure experiences. Sailability exists to break down those barriers open up new worlds of adventure for children and young people and emphasise what they can do, not what they can’t. It empowers families in difficult circumstances 24/7 to be what they crave for a few precious hours – a normal everyday family, enjoying a day out together.

Sailability was an amazing opportunity for my son to do something he couldn't have achieved in normal circumstances. He loved the day sailing. His face lit up with smiles all day!

You can vote for WellChild in Derbyshire Tesco stores throughout November and December. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Last year, we had over 100 parents, children and young people attend from across the UK who had a magical and memorable day. This year, we want Sailability to be even bigger, and better! If you live near Carsington Water, please vote for Sailability Summer Splash at your local Tesco store.
