Tips & Fundraising at Cheltenham Festival Preview Night

Posted on the 9th March 2018

Over 120 racing fans gathered at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Princess Hall last night for ‘Festival Focus’ – an extra special Cheltenham Festival preview night and fundraiser for WellChild, sponsored by CelebLotto and supported by Martin & Co and the Racing Post.

With the Gold Cup encased in glass on stage (courtesy of Martin & Co) just a few feet away, ITV Racing’s lead presenter and WellChild ambassador Ed Chamberlin was joined by an expert panel for an insightful and often entertaining discussion about their experiences and most interestingly, their tips for Festival week.

The panel included Racing Post Editor Bruce Millington, trainers Charlie Longsdon, Richard Phillips and ITV commentator Richard Hoiles. They were later joined by jockey Daryl Jacob who had made it down from a 5:35 race in Carlisle especially for evening.

Cheltenham Festival tips

Amongst a sometimes lively panel debate, Native River and Might Bite were highlighted as possible Gold Cup winners this year. Whilst some consensus was drawn around the chances of Any Second Now in the last race on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Samcro (Tuesday, first race) is clearly causing a stir of excitement across the Irish Sea. Other horses to watch included The King of May in the Fred Winter on Wednesday and Apples Shakira in the first race on Friday.

Fundraising success

Punctuating the debates was a chance to bet on the WellChild charity races, expertly commentated by ITV Racing’s Richard Hoiles. Overall the event raised almost £14,000 for WellChild.

Colin Dyer, WellChild Chief Executive said: “As a national charity based in Cheltenham it is great to tap into the excitement that the Cheltenham Festival brings to the town. The money raised from this event will have a direct impact on the lives of a growing population of seriously ill children, young people and families who desperately need our help.

A huge thanks to our amazing ambassador Ed Chamberlin and supporters CelebLotto, Martin & Co, Creed and the Racing Post. We hope this will become an exciting annual addition to our events and fundraising calendar.”
