Food delivery tips for families

During the first lockdown, many families were struggling to access food deliveries, regardless of whether they were on the Government’s shielding list.

Official Government shielding advice has now ended, and clinically extremely vulnerable people no longer have access to priority delivery slots.

However, most supermarkets with an online delivery or click and collect service have increased capacity since the start of the pandemic in 2020, adding thousands of delivery slots to their regular services. This includes most of the major supermarkets, like AsdaMorrisonsSainsburysTesco and Waitrose. This means that it should be easier to find a delivery or click and collect slot now than it was during the first lockdown in 2020.

In addition to the  delivery services offered by the supermarkets mentioned above, we have put together the following tips for getting food deliveries for families who are self-isolating or being cautious about going to the shops in person. There is also information about how to access support from foodbanks if needed.



The supermarket have a new click and collect service. There is a charge for using the service and it is not yet available at every shop. Find out if the service is available in your area here:



Morrisons have a Doorstep Delivery service for people who are self-isolating due to Covid-19. You can call 0345 611 6111 and select option 5 to place an order from a small selection of basic, but essential items. The service is only available if you live within 10 miles of a Morrisons shop. Morrisons also offer a food box service. Dietary specific options like vegan or gluten free are available alongside cupboard essentials. You can order the food boxes online here:



Some Co-ops are offering a food delivery service. Check whether delivery is available in your area by visiting

Midcounties Co-op have a delivery system for essentials operated by local volunteers. They are now also operating a “call and collect” service find out more here >> 



Iceland have a free next day delivery service with a minimum spend of £35. They have a good range of essential and value items to choose from. You can book delivery here:



Supermarkets and some smaller shops offer a limited range of essential items on the Deliveroo website for same day delivery. The service is fast but has a delivery fee and is only available in some areas.


Other food Boxes

There are numerous food box subscription delivery services across the UK. Most of the options on the website below are for specific foods, for example weekly vegetable box delivery services. It can also be worth contacting local suppliers such as butchers and grocers who may offer a weekly box service already, or might be able to put a box together for you and deliver it.


Volunteer Shopping

If you have volunteers available to help with your shopping, several supermarkets are offering volunteer shopping cards that can be topped up at home and sent to the volunteer shopping on your behalf. The cards function in much the same way as gift cards. This means no cash or bank details need to be exchanged with a volunteer. Most of the volunteer/gift cards can be emailed to the volunteer, or printed out and left in a safe place for the volunteer to pick up. Physical cards are also sometimes available on request.

Food banks

Support from food banks is available for those who are unable to buy food due to financial hardship. Trussell Trust food banks can provide people with emergency food and a referral system remains in place. If you require the support of a food bank you can get a referral from your local Citizen’s Advice or a professional, for example someone who works in health or social care.
