With the help of volunteers from British Gas, WellChild have transformed the garden of ten-year-old Lyle from Cheltenham as one of their Helping Hands projects. This project marks the 15th anniversary of this programme through which WellChild and an army of volunteers have transformed hundreds of bedroom and garden spaces for children across the UK.

Lyle has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which is a progressive condition. He is a wheelchair user and requires adult support and supervision to ensure his needs are being met. Lyle spends a lot of time at home. Even when he is well and able to get out and about, many places are not safe or accessible to him.

The family garden was very uneven which didn’t give Lyle the chance to spend time outdoors.

WellChild and volunteers have created a level space where he can access, play and enjoy being with his family and friends. Having a garden that is a safe and stimulating place to will really enhance the quality of Lyle’s life.

Our team as created a suitable, safe and accessible outside space where Lyle can play, relax, gain independence and thrive. Having made the area safe and accessible, with a wide range of materials such as decking and artificial grass, we have also incorporated sensory items such as planting, water play, sensory lighting and play equipment, designed specifically to suit Lyle’s abilities and what he wants to do in his new garden space.

These changes will make a huge difference to Lyle and his family who will now be able to create happy memories and spend quality time outdoors together.
