Delilah enjoys accessible garden thanks to makeover from WellChild and Unum volunteers

Two year old Delilah will benefit from her brand new garden. The new space was transformed in just two days thanks to volunteers from Unum.

Two year old Delilah needed a garden that would give her a safe and accessible space for her to play and develop. Delilah has myelomeningocele spina bifida which effects her core strength, meaning she is currently able to crawl but is a full time self propelled wheelchair user.

The garden was unsuitable for Delilah’s needs. The space was bumpy with uneven surfaces that were inaccessible to her in her wheelchair. Her care team are working to promote independent movement and a safe space outside for her to practice and gain confidence is key at this stage of her development. It will, over time, help her gain independence.

The garden before the team set to work

Volunteers from Unum worked incredibly hard and in just two days they created a safe and accessible garden space for Delilah to play and spend quality time in.

The team began by clearing and levelling the uneven ground ready to create space for a large deck. They then set about preparing a larger area for artificial grass. Once fitted, the team then added some bark chippings, a mirror and a chalk board to complete the garden makeover.

Making these changes will have a positive impact on home-life for Delilah. She will be able play with her siblings, improve her independence and create happy memories with her family and friends.

A huge thank you goes to Unum for volunteering their time on the project and to long-term partner West Way Nissan for getting us to the project safely in our van.
