Ava

At 11 years old, Ava’s life has been transformed thanks to WellChild’s Helping Hands programme and the dedication and hard work of a compassionate team from Siemens. For Ava and her family, what was once a dream is now a reality—a garden that has reshaped their daily lives.

For Siemens, this project was more than just a community service—it was an opportunity to come together in person and make a tangible difference. “It was a fantastic few days and a great chance to work with colleagues I had only ever seen on Teams meetings,” shared one Siemens volunteer, reflecting the teamwork and sense of purpose that came with getting stuck into the project.

Ava’s family couldn’t be more grateful.

"It's amazing what you do. I can’t thank you enough. You have changed our lives,"

The transformation of Ava’s garden has had a profound impact on everyone in the family. Before, the six-week summer holidays were a source of anxiety for Ava’s mum as she faced the reality that Ava could not get outside. While her brothers played in the garden, she was left behind, unable to join in. Now, with a safe and accessible garden, Ava can play with her siblings for the first time.

"We’re outside all the time now unless it’s raining. We even had a picnic in November. Ava played in the snow for the first time ever! It was amazing to see and emotional too,"

Beginning the project

The volunteers from Siemens spent two days in challenging, wet weather conditions to bring this dream to life. They cleared away the old, uneven lawn, broke down existing concrete, and constructed a new area with deck boards and artificial grass. They replaced overgrown bushes with new fencing, added a section of bark, and installed a new solar light, all to create a safe and welcoming space for Ava.

The finished result

These changes have given Ava a newfound sense of independence. She now feels safe enough to try new activities—she’s kicked a football with her brothers, used a scooter for the first time, and her happiness has soared. "Her sense of independence has increased a million per cent, she’s not as weary, she’s a million per cent happier. We all are," said Ava’s mum.

This summer, for the first time, Ava’s family is looking forward to the holidays with excitement. They have got a paddling pool and enjoy watching Ava play with her siblings, creating precious memories together.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Siemens volunteers, Ava now has a garden that is more than just a physical space—it’s a place where she can grow, explore, have fun and gain independence. Ava can enjoy her childhood alongside her family.
