James

At 8 years old, James’s life at home has been transformed thanks to WellChild’s Helping Hands programme and the dedication of a hardworking team from Speedy. For James and his family, a once-inaccessible garden has now become a cherished space where he can explore and play safely.

For the team from Speedy, this project was about much more than community service—it was a chance to make a lasting impact. “Seeing the family’s smiles after the work was completed was incredibly rewarding,” shared one Speedy volunteer. “I found the whole experience thoroughly fulfilling, especially when you see the joy and relief it brings to families like James’s.”

James’s family share how the new garden has changed their lives.

"This has changed our lives. I can’t thank you enough for giving James the chance to enjoy the outdoors with his sister,"

Before

Before WellChild and Speedy stepped in, James’s garden was unmanageable for his family and difficult for James to access. The uneven ground made it impossible for him to use his walker or wheelchair safely, leaving him unable to join his sister outside to play. While she played in the garden James had to stay indoors. The uneven surface made any attempt to use the walker a risky venture—James often tipped over, making it dangerous for both him and his family.

After

The transformation was no small feat. Over two days, Speedy’s volunteers tackled the challenging task of leveling the garden and replacing the uneven ground with artificial grass and weatherproof decking. The team installed a pergola for shade, ensuring James could enjoy his therapy sessions outdoors, rain or shine. And James’s favourite part—the sensory board—adds a wonderful element of play and tactile stimulation that helps with his development.

This has changed our lives. I can’t thank you enough for giving James the chance to enjoy the outdoors with his sister.

The result is a garden that has given James a newfound sense of freedom. He now plays side-by-side with his sister, moving around without fear of tipping over. He even dashes up and down the decking, laughing with Emily as they race together. “James’s happiness has soared,” said his mum. “We’ve made so many new memories, and we’re outside together more than ever.”

This summer, for the first time, James’s family is looking forward to many sunny days in the garden, making precious memories. Thanks to the compassionate team from Speedy, James now has a space where he can grow, play, and enjoy his childhood alongside his family.
