Over 30 families with children who have complex medical needs took to the water at this year’s accessible family sailing event at Carsington Water Sailing Club, Derbyshire, on Saturday 27th July.

The award-winning ‘Sailability’ event was the inspiration of Dr David Thomas who is a Consultant Paediatrician at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. Dr Thomas is a keen sailor and member of Carsington Sailing Club.

As well as getting out on the water, families were able to enjoy onshore activities such as crafts, picnics and incredible entertainment from Quite Remarkable Productions!

The event, which was free to attend, included specially designed access boats for children and young people with disabilities, with expert crews and specialised equipment to help sailors in and out of boats.

The event prides itself on being accessible and inclusive for all, meaning there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

Catherine Davies, WellChild Family Programme Manager said: “Sailability is a fantastic accessible event that enables families to spend precious time together. It also allows families to meet face-to-face and take part in fun activities.

Families caring for a child with complex medical needs can feel isolated and alone. Through events like Sailability and the growing WellChild Family Tree network, families who are all facing similar challenges can come together share their experiences, have fun, make good friends and great memories.”
