WellChild Families Enjoy an Accessible Day Out at Chester Zoo

By Charlotte Edwards · July 11, 2024

On Saturday, 6th July, we were delighted to welcome 27 WellChild Families for an unforgettable, accessible day out at Chester Zoo. The event was filled with excitement and happy faces, featuring prepared goody bags, a variety of snacks, an engaging scavenger hunt, colouring activities, and much more. This special day was designed to provide a fun and memorable experience for all the families involved.

The event at Chester Zoo provided a wonderful opportunity for us to invite WellChild Families from the local area, allowing us to get to know them better and facilitate introductions among the families.

The families fully embraced the day and were able to create lasting memories together.

“The event today allowed us to have rare family time. We've enjoyed every minute. Thank You.”

“I had so much fun today. Thank you. (Eva – sibling)”

We extend our gratitude to the Chester Zoo team for their exceptional flexibility and support, which made the day truly special.

"It’s been so great to see all the WellChild t-shirts around the zoo today and has made my day!"

Chester Zoo Staff

Thanks also goes to Creed Food Service for donating snacks for the families on the day. This took the stress out of lunch arrangements and meant the families could get on with enjoying their day. Our appreciation as always to Brayley Nissan, with the WellChild van enabling us to transport everything we needed for the day.

Catherine Davies, WellChild Family Engagement Manager said about the day:

"Despite the unpredictable UK weather, it was a fantastic day bringing our WellChild families together at Chester Zoo. The venue is fully accessible and even has a changing places toilet, meaning our families could just come along, have fun, meet other parent carers and make some great memories together as a family.

Catherine Davies, WellChild Family Engagement Manager

For families with children who have complex medical needs, they are often exhausted by the pressures of 24/7 care needs, the lack of carers to support them, and the constant fight for services. It’s ever more so vital to ensure we create spaces and opportunities for these families to come together, connect them to communities like our WellChild Family Tree to reduce their isolation and just have some fun so they can go back home and thrive as any family should.”
