WellChild launches first-of-its-kind holiday guide for families of children with complex medical needs
WellChild is proud to launch a brand-new, free resource designed to support families holidaying with a child with complex medical needs.
We know that families of children with complex medical needs often face extraordinary challenges when it comes to something many take for granted: going on holiday. Today, WellChild is proud to launch a brand-new, free resource designed to help change that.
Family holidays and days out can be incredibly valuable, offering time to make memories, step away from daily routines, and have something positive to look forward to during challenging periods. Yet planning a break when your child has complex medical needs can feel overwhelming and sometimes impossible.
The WellChild Holiday Guide has been created to make that process a little easier. Inside, families will find practical prompts, step-by-step guidance, checklists, and advice from other parent carers, covering everything from planning and packing to finding suitable accommodation and managing care needs, whether travelling within the UK or abroad. The aim is simple: to help families feel more confident, supported, and better prepared so they can focus on enjoying time away together.
Drawing on insights from WellChild’s national network of more than 3,000 families, the guide provides real-world, experience-led advice to help make holidays feel more achievable, even for those who may have previously ruled them out altogether.
For many families, the barriers to taking a break can feel overwhelming.
One parent carer from the WellChild network shared:
“Going on holiday quickly becomes overwhelming. It should be an enjoyable experience but all the equipment, finding a suitable place to stay and coordinating makes it very difficult. Being without care and the equipment at home that makes life easier takes away the safety net and increases anxiety around travelling somewhere new.”
Another added:
“I need a guide like this. We haven’t been on holiday in ages because it costs a lot more for families like ours and we’ve got so much to take with us that it just feels like too much work sometimes. It’s so sad because I’d love to take my daughter away to see the world.”
The new guide aims to tackle these challenges head-on; breaking down what can feel like an impossible task into manageable, realistic steps, while offering reassurance from families who have been there.
“This booklet doesn’t just offer guidance; it offers comfort. It eases anxieties, provides a sense of safety, and gives families the confidence to make precious memories they might otherwise feel are out of reach.”
Holidays are more than just a break, they are an opportunity for families to spend meaningful time together, away from the pressures of daily medical routines and appointments.
The WellChild Holiday Guide reflects this, encouraging families to feel empowered to take that step, while acknowledging the additional planning, resilience and courage it often requires.
This free resource is available to download now, supporting families across the UK to create lasting memories together, because every child deserves the opportunity to thrive at home with their family.
