Safe and Sensory Garden Transformed in Swindon for 17-Year-Old Matthew with Complex Medical Needs Thanks to The Openwork Foundation and WellChild
Check out our latest garden makeover for 17-year-old Matthew, powered by Openwork and Openwork Foundation.
A remarkable garden makeover has transformed the outdoor space at the home of seventeen-year-old Matthew in Swindon, creating a safe, accessible and sensory-rich environment designed around his needs. The project was made possible by The Openwork Foundation and coordinated by WellChild, the national charity for seriously ill children.
Delivered as part of WellChild’s Helping Hands programme, the transformation took place over two days on 12 and 13 May 2026 in partnership with The Openwork Partnership and The Openwork Foundation. Alongside funding the project, volunteers from across the organisation gave their time and energy to help bring the plans to life.
Matthew lives with down syndrome, epilepsy and requires continuous oxygen therapy, as well as having undergone numerous heart and skull surgeries. The project aimed to create an outdoor space where he can enjoy spending time at home with his family.
Alex Davies, Head of The Openwork Foundation, said:
Partnering with WellChild to create a new garden for Matthew and his family is a perfect example of what The Openwork Foundation stands for. At our heart is a commitment to making a real difference and helping people have a secure home, and we’re proud to work hands-on with WellChild to create a more enjoyable space for Matthew. We’re grateful to the WellChild team for making this happen and look forward to doing more together to support people in our local community.
Matt James, WellChild CEO, said:
“The WellChild Helping Hands programme is only possible thanks to the support of incredible partners like Openwork and The Openwork Foundation, and we are hugely grateful. It’s not just the funding they provide – it’s the people-power too. Together, that support makes transformations like this possible for children with complex medical needs across the UK. It helps families like Matthew’s to thrive at home and create precious moments and lasting memories together.”
“There honestly aren’t enough thanks I can give. This is going to be lifechanging for us. Matthew loves being outside and now he can get into the garden safely. He hasn’t been able to use this space since the Covid-19 pandemic, so this truly is incredible. I have already bought some garden games for him to play with out here. I wish I could hug you all – thank you so much to WellChild and Openwork”
