Speedy volunteers help transform family garden for 10 year old Aalaeya

Aalaeya and her family now have a safe and accessible garden that they can all enjoy.

10 year old Aalaeya loves spending time outside. She is keen to be independent and enjoys exploring. Unfortunately the family garden was not suitable for her needs. Aalaeya has a Neurodegenerative Disorder, visual impairment and Global Development Delay. She uses a standing frame and has a white cane. Due to Aalaeya’s reduced balance and coordination she requires close adult supervision to ensure her safety.

The family garden had steps and uneven ground which prevented Aalaeya from accessing and spending time
outside. Our Helping Hands team and volunteers from Speedy set to work to transform the garden into a safe, enjoyable and accessible space for Aalaeya.

The garden before the team set to work

Speedy volunteers helped us over two days to create an accessible garden for Aalaeya. The team cleared and levelled the garden by hand. Once the ground work was complete, multiple deck frames and a ramp were constructed. The ramp creates level access into the garden and runs directly onto a large decked area with artificial grass.

Balustrade fencing and a planter secured the whole area, creating a safe and flat playing space for Aalaeya to enjoy. Having an accessible garden will give Aalaeya the independence to explore her garden and to improve her mobility, confidence and strength. The whole family will be able to spend time outdoors creating happy memories together.

A huge thank you goes to Speedy for volunteering their time on the project and to long-term partner West Way Nissan for getting us to the project safely in our van.
